“No. Thank you, brother. I’ll give you an answer tomorrow.”

He didn’t have time to reply because right at that moment, the door opened and Penny walked in. She immediately set about criticising Lucy but stopped the second she saw Andrew watching her.

“Andrew. I wasn’t expecting you back so soon. Darling what a wonderful surprise.” She opened her arms and rushed over to him.

They hugged and then Penny stepped back and scowled at him. “So, did you do as I asked? Did you find that wretched child a taker?”

Andrew glanced at Lucy through the corner of his eye and winked before turning to look his wife in the eye and shaking his head.

“Then you can sleep on your own tonight.” She turned round, stormed into her room and slammed the door.

“Thank You,” Lucy said, before going about her business.

No matter how trying the day before had been, you always started with a fresh slate. And at that point in the morning, it was freshest of all.

The pain in her leg was much better now but still, hurt a little. She took a final deep breath of the fresh morning air, went back into the house and was about to step across to the stove when she saw Andrew. “Andrew I err . . .”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. I was up early and wondered if you’d like to go for a stroll.”

She smiled and decided not to mention she’d just come in. “That sounds delightful.”

They walked shoulder to shoulder along the garden path and into the vast plain that stretched all the way back to the horizon, where the sun was still in its infancy. There were trees dotted around,
